What is Dedicated Hosting?
Dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet Hosting in which the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In some cases a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment. Dedicated servers are most often housed in data centers, similar to colocation facilities, providing redundant power sources and HVAC systems. In contrast to collocation, the server hardware is owned by the provider and in some cases they will provide support for your operating system or applications.
In the web hosting industry, a dedicated server is usually defined as the rental and exclusive use of a computer that includes a web server, related software, and connection to the Internet, located on-site, within a web hosting company's premises. In most cases, for compilation of related company websites, that may develop a considerable amount of traffic, a dedicated server is usually needed. In many cases, the server may be configured and operated on a remote basis, independently located from the client company.
More simply put — A single computer on a web hosting network that is leased or rented, and dedicated to just one customer comprises a dedicated server. A service provider will monitor the computer's hardware, network connectivity, and routing equipment, while the customer generally controls and maintains the server software. Dedicated servers are usually used for websites that have grown beyond the basic standard web hosting account, and require a more comprehensive network. They also are used by larger companies that need separate systems for mail, web, and database servers. Web hosting companies may have their sites spread over one or several servers.
Internet business owners generally choose to outsource dedicated servers, due to the highly technical nature of the requirements, and the high availability of networks from multiple providers. Dedicated server providers utilize great amounts of bandwidth, and are able to obtain lower volume costs, which can include multi-providers in any given plan. Generally, the expenses required to develop a single network alone, is not economically feasible for most web hosting companies.
